The Purpose of a Music Video

I am going to do some research into music videos specifically on the purpose of them and why they are an important aspect of the music industry. This will help me understand what a music video really is and why artists have them.

Promotional Tool

·       To sell the song and intrigue the audience so that they remember the song

·       To give the audience a visual interpretation and a better understanding of the song

·       To entertain the audience and show off the artist’s talents

·       To sell CDs, DVDs and downloads by creating memorable visuals

·       Expanding and exposing the artists profile

·       Promotes a song and therefore promotes an album

·       To sell the image of the artist and get them noticed to gain an audience

·       Generate money for the record company

Extension of Income

·       Music videos can help to promote a band or artist after a single or album is released.

·       Sometimes artists will release the song first and then bring out the music video a few weeks later to make the song last longer and it keeps people listening to it.

·       Some artists are remembered years later because of a memorable music video for example Thriller by Michael Jackson. 

 

Synergy

·       This can relate to a music star releasing a music video which features scenes from a movie for example Writings on the Wall by Sam Smith for the James Bond film Spectre.

·       This helps to promote the film by also the artist as their song will feature in the film and probably the trailer where it will be accessible to view by a wider number of people.

·       Also every time they watch the film they will be reminded of the song which is a really good use of marketing and making sure the song is still being listened too and isn’t forgotten. 

 

 

By doing this task I have learn't about many reasons why music videos are important to the music industry and the purpose of having them. Overall I have learnt that the main reason for them is to increase the fame and income for the artist which is important for them to gain a fan base and compete for their place in the industry. I can now gain from this and look at what sort of features music videos include to help promote them and start developing ideas for my own music video.
